Choosing substrate for your bearded dragon

substateWho knew there were so many choices for substrate in your bearded dragon habitat?  There are many different choices as far as substrate goes, some of which are fine for only juveniles, only adults, or may be suitable or all ages.

Paper towels are suitable for baby beardies, but not adults.  It is a low cost choice, but must be changed frequently.

Calcium sand can be used only for adults, but it must be Calcium sand, not any other form of sand.  No type of sand is ever suitable for babies.

Rabbit pellets can be used as substrate for adults, but must be changed frequently.

Crimped oats can be used for any age bearded dragon.  It is better looking  and than rabbit pellets are, but again, must be changed frequently.

Reptile bark can be used for adults only, but must be washed first.

Carpet is another good alternative for substrate that can be used for any age bearded dragon.  Make sure to trim any loose or frayed areas.

Never use wood shavings or gravel as substrate.
